Open Catalyst Project – Terms of Use
Welcome to the Open Catalyst Project! The Open Catalyst Project is a collaborative research effort between Facebook AI Research (FAIR) and Carnegie Mellon University’s (CMU) Department of Chemical Engineering. The aim is to use AI to model and discover new catalysts for use in renewable energy storage to help in addressing climate change. To enable the broader research community to participate in this important project, we release the Open Catalyst Dataset for training ML models (the “Dataset”).

COMMUNITY GUIDELINES
Thank you for taking part in the Open Catalyst Project! We welcome your participation and contributions to the project which make the Open Catalyst Project a success.
In order to ensure that our community is safe and built on mutual respect and understanding, we have set out these Community Guidelines that we ask you to agree to and comply with when posting or otherwise contributing on the Website.
Discussion Forum
We provide you on the Website with a discussion forum (“Forum”).
This is a civilized place for public discussion. Please treat this Forum with the same respect you would a public park. We, too, are a shared community resource — a place to share skills, knowledge and interests through ongoing conversation.
These are not hard and fast rules, merely aids to the human judgment of our community. Use these guidelines to keep this a clean, well-lighted place for civilized public discourse.
Improve the Discussion - Help us make this a great place for discussion by always working to improve the discussion in some way, however small. If you are not sure your post adds to the conversation, think over what you want to say and try again later.
The topics discussed here matter to us, and we want you to act as if they matter to you, too. Be respectful of the topics and the people discussing them, even if you disagree with some of what is being said.
One way to improve the discussion is by discovering ones that are already happening. Please spend some time browsing the topics here before replying or starting your own, and you will have a better chance of meeting others who share your interests.
Be Agreeable, Even When You Disagree: You may wish to respond to something by disagreeing with it politely. That is fine. However, remember to criticize ideas, not people. Please avoid name-calling, ad hominem attacks, responding to a post’s tone instead of its actual content and knee-jerk contradiction. Instead, provide reasoned counter-arguments that improve the conversation.
Your Participation Counts: The conversations we have here set the tone for everyone. Help us influence the future of this community by choosing to engage in discussions that make this forum an interesting place to be - and avoiding those that do not. Discourse provides tools that enable the community to collectively identify the best (and worst) Contributions: favorites, bookmarks, likes, flags, replies, edits, and so forth. Use these tools to improve your own experience, and everyone else’s, too. Let’s try to leave our park better than we found it.
If You See a Problem, Flag It: Moderators have special authority, they are responsible for this Forum. However, so are you. With your help, moderators can be community facilitators, not just janitors or police. When you see bad behavior, do not reply. It encourages the bad behavior by acknowledging it, consumes your energy, and wastes everyone’s time. Just flag it. If enough flags accrue, action will be taken, either automatically or by moderator intervention.
In order to maintain our community, moderators reserve the right to remove any content and any user account for any reason at any time. Moderators do not preview new posts in any way, the moderators and site operators take no responsibility for any content posted by the community.
Always Be Civil: Nothing sabotages a healthy conversation like rudeness:
- Be civil. Do not post anything that a reasonable person would consider offensive, abusive, or hate speech.
- Keep it clean. Do not post anything obscene or sexually explicit.
- Respect each other. Do not harass or grief anyone, impersonate people, or expose their private information.
- Respect our Forum. Do not post spam or otherwise vandalize the forum.
These are not concrete terms with precise definitions — avoid even the appearance of any of these things. If you’re unsure, ask yourself how you would feel if your post was featured on the front page of the New York Times.
This is a public forum, and search engines index these discussions. Keep the language, links, and images safe for family and friends.
Keep It Tidy: Make the effort to put things in the right place, so that we can spend more time discussing and less cleaning up. So:
- Do not start a topic in the wrong category.
- Do not cross-post the same thing in multiple topics.
- Do not post no-content replies.
- Do not divert a topic by changing it midstream.
- Do not sign your posts — every post has your profile information attached to it.
Rather than posting “+1” or “Agreed”, use the Like button. Rather than taking an existing topic in a radically different direction, use Reply as a Linked Topic.
Post Only Your Own Stuff: You may not post anything digital that belongs to someone else without permission. You may not post descriptions of, links to, or methods for stealing someone’s intellectual property (software, video, audio, images), or for breaking any other law.

REPORTING INTELLECTUAL PROPERTY RIGHTS INFRINGEMENTS
How do I report copyright or trademark infringement on the Website?
If you believe content on the Website is infringing on your copyright or trademark, you can take one or more of the following actions:
-
You can contact our designated agent. If you contact our designated agent, please be sure to include a complete copyright or trademark claim in your report.
-
You may be able to resolve the issue without contacting us, by sending a message to the person who posted the content.
Please note that:
-
only the copyright or trademark owner or their authorized representative may file a report of copyright infringement. If you believe something on the Website infringes someone else’s copyright or trademark, you may want to let the rights owner know.
-
We regularly provide the rights owner’s name, your email and the details of your report to the person who posted the content you are reporting. In the case that you are an authorized representative submitting a report, we provide the name of the organization or client that owns the right in question. For this reason, you may wish to provide a valid generic business or professional email.
-
We can’t adjudicate disputes between third parties, and so we wouldn’t be in a position to act on trademark reports that require an in-depth trademark analysis or a real-world dispute outside of the Website. In these situations, rather than contacting us, you may want to reach out directly to the party that you believe is infringing your rights, or seek any resolution in court or by other judicial means.
What should I consider before submitting a report of intellectual property infringement?
Before you submit a report, please consider whether the content you want to report may be a permissible use of your copyright or trademark. If you’re not sure whether the content you’re reporting infringes your intellectual property rights (ex: because it may be a fair use), you may want to seek legal guidance.
Please note that submitting a report of intellectual property infringement is a serious matter with potential legal consequences. Intentionally submitting misleading or otherwise fraudulent reports of copyright or trademark infringement may lead to us taking action, including termination of your account.
For copyright, it’s important to note that intentionally submitting a misleading or fraudulent report may also lead to liability for damages under section 512(f) of the United States Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA) or similar laws in other countries.
How do I contact your Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA) designated agent?
